Manual lymphatic drainage: benefits, technique, and what to expect (wellness)

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is one of the most requested—and poorly explained—spa services in Lisbon and surroundings. Below: what it is, how it usually feels, limits, and when it’s the wrong choice.

In spa or massage-studio settings, MLD is a sequence of very gentle, repetitive strokes. It is not deep tissue or “knot busting”—for that, see types of massage.

  • Light pressure—sometimes described as “almost nothing” at first; that can be intentional.
  • Mild sleepiness or thirst; hydrate.
  • “Lighter legs” is a common perception—not the same as fat loss.

  • Jobs with long standing or long-haul travel.
  • Seeking relaxation with a lower-body focus.
  • Self-care complement—not disease treatment without follow-up.

Acute infection, fever, acute skin inflammation, thrombosis history without clearance, decompensated heart failure, some oncology cases—always disclose before the session. Sudden swelling or chest pain: not a spa case.

  1. Specific MLD training (not only “general massage”).
  2. Areas covered in the booked time.
  3. Oils and allergies.
  4. Policy if pregnant or with a medical condition.

Don’t confuse wellness massage with physiotherapy. For boundaries, read wellness vs. physiotherapy.
